Animations for Patient Educational Video on ICDs and Goals-of-Care for Parkland Hospital

Watch video below:

Project Overview

As part of a Quality Improvement initiative led by Dr. Melanie Sulistio, in partnership with Parkland Hospital leadership and a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, palliative care physicians, nurses, and QI experts, we created a patient-centered educational video to help teach about implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and guide patients through goals of care decision-making.

I had the opportunity to help our team integrate clinical input from various sources into the development of storyboards/scripts for patients, as well as create the final animations and voiceover for our video. It was a meaningful challenge to try to cohesively and clearly visually represent challenging key concepts around ICDs and goals-of-care. It was also incredibly fulfilling to see our final video video being utilized by patients and providers to help guide real-life decisions.

Special thanks to Dr. Melanie Sulistio, Dr. Kelley Newcomer, Dr. Mark Berlacher, Dr. Nimesh Patel, Dr. Alpesh Amin, Dr. Kristin Alvarez, Dr. Gary Reed, Mrs. Megan Kelly, Mr. Damon Broglie, Patrice Griffith, Arlen Suarez, as well as the Parkland Health and Hospital System, The Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation, and the UTSW Quality, Safety, and Outcomes Education department for their contributions to this effort.

Snapshots from video

Early storyboard mockups

Here are some mockups of the early storyboards of one of the key analogies we used in our animation, comparing an ICD’s function to that of a fire detector/alarm in a house. This storyboard eventually became the groundwork for the final animation in the video.
